Dreaming of the Future / Design of Czechoslovak glass and jewellery 1948-1989

In the Czech Republic, the topic of the design of Czechoslovak glassware and jewellery from 1948 to 1989 has not yet been sufficiently treated in a monographic manner, as attention has been mainly focused on broader projects or, on the contrary, on individual issues – selected companies, artistic (author, studio) glass, fine art personalities and professional schools. It is interesting that not only contemporary, but also present-day authors view the socialist period mostly through the lens of fine artists-witnesses. They emphasize and defend their role, agree with them in terms of values and adopt their narrative, which is, however, necessarily ahistorical, one-sided, and out of context. The aim of the publication, composed within the grant project titled the Design of Czechoslovak Glass and Jewellery 1948–1989 (DG18P02OVV031) funded within the Programme for the Support of Applied Research and Experimental Development of National Cultural Identity from 2016 to 2022

(NAKI II) of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, carried out by the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou, is therefore to try to reduce the deficit and to bring the sum of information obtained both by excerpting the published texts and archive sources in one volume, with an emphasis on identifying the major profile landmarks, irrespective of the preferences of the individual participants.
