One family, two generations, three personalities-
Under the title 3 x KOPŘIVA, the Museum of Glass and Jewellery has put together a conceptual exhibition of the work of spouses Karolína Kopřivová (born 1970) and Pavel Kopřiva (born 1968) and their son Pavel Kopřiva Jr. (born 1995), who, in addition to a collective piece of work specially created for this occasion, are showcasing a selection of their own glass and multimedia work.
Each member of the Kopřiva family works with the material in a different way, not noticeably inspiring the others, and yet they are all connected. "We create special exhibition projects that present different forms of contemporary glass art in the glass space of the museum extension. This, however, will be the first time we see the creative potential of two generations of the same family altogether," says Director Milada Valečková.
Pavel Kopřiva, a graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), is a successful conceptual artist, teacher, and manager. He runs the Interactive Media Studio at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and is head of the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Kamenický Šenov. "He combines glass with new media, is interested in nanofibres and the world controlled by computers, military technology, and ufology, and he is fascinated by mirrors," says Petr Nový, curator of the exhibition, about his work. By contrast, Karolína Kopřivová takes her inspiration from nature and biology. Cell structures, microorganisms, underwater fauna and flora, fungi, and plants all provide her with the creative impulse. She is a graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague and is the current head of the Department of Painted Glass Design at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Kamenický Šenov. In the meantime, Pavel Kopřiva Jr., who attended Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and the Czech Technical University in Prague, is described by Petr Nový as "the closest point to authorial design, the creation of artfully-designed limited collections of objects. Decorations that might, but need not have a clear practical purpose."
The exhibition will be from November 8, 2024 to April 27, 2025.
